• Arrival

  The first ten minutes are the event

  Guests do not experience your mood board. They experience a door, a question, and whether anyone was ready for them.

• Guest path

  The evening is a path, not a still

  Photographs are rooms at rest. Guests are rooms in motion. Rank the transitions before you dress the tables.

• Sightlines

  If they cannot see each other, it is not a gathering

  A centerpiece can win the photograph and lose the table. Height is not hospitality.

• Light

  Pretty light that fails the hours is not atmosphere

  String lights are a portrait. Plates and faces after dusk are the event. Light needs layers.

• Service

  The kitchen has a path, or the guests are the path

  Food, drink, and program are not styling. They are a sequence with load-in, staging, and a route that must not be the gathering.

• Contingency

  A rain plan you cannot walk is not a plan

  Pretty is still not a plan. Weather, overflow, and curfew are votes. If the fallback is a sentence, the evening is a one-way bet.
